Not A Harry Potter Post

Here it is! Finally a post that is not about Harry Potter.

I finished my annotated bibliography and got it turned in. Woooo! I have never written a paper that will (hopefully) be 22 pages. I’m not gonna lie, even though I’m a writer 22 pages of not creative writing is very daunting. However, bright side, my annotated biblee was 5 pages long. That’s right. FIVE FREAKING PAGES! It’s time to take a little breather.

So sure, even though I’m reading the last HP book, I am taking a break (sorta).

What’s been going on in the world since I OD-ed on HP?

Well, (and here’s where the sorta plays in) J.K. Rowling announced her plans for publishing a new book. I’m not aure about you all out there in web-world, but I’m a bit on the fence about this. I’m worried it will be like seeing your favorite actor in the behind the scenes feature on the DVD – it kills the spell that the movie could be real. I’m really excited to see what she does and what else her amazing mind can produce… BUT at the same time, it almost breaks the spell. I will wait to make up my mind when we know more about this new book.

Also I have realized that I don’t have enough time to read all the books I want to read: The Hunger Games, Cinder, The Fault in Our Stars… not to name all the books I’ve procured over the years that I still haven’t gotten to. But, I think I can make time for some audiobooks… esp when they are handpicked and produced by Neil Gaiman. Why has it taken me so long to find this? Neil Gaiman Presents? Check it out here. Such good fun.

Thirdly, I can finally access my former college professor’s blog on my home computer. Why did it not work before? I don’t know… BUT, I have a link to it in my blog roll. He always has fun tidbits and news about fantasy, writing, and other things. I really think you should check it out.

Lastly, Castle had my favorite episode on last night. It was all new and all awesome. Castle + fairy tale characters being murdered = some good monday night fun. Also, the other week Nathan Fillion (Mr. Rick Castle himself) was on Jimmy Kimmel. You can check out both episodes on the network webpage.

So that’s what I got right now. I have another clip to share with you all, but you’ll have to wait until next time :0)

Overload and Why Reality TV is Okay

Today was a library day for me. It was super awesome. It feels like it’s been years since I’ve holed up in a study room, gotten strung out on coffee, and knocked out a ton of work. And maybe it has been. Usually when I’m on campus for grad school I mostly hide in my room or sprawl out on the sofa and knock out the work. Maybe it’s been since college since I had one of these days.

You may be thinking to yourself: Holy cow, you’re crazy! You actually enjoy that?!?

I love learning and being a student and being a student focusing on something that I actually love – as opposed to class that I have to take to graduate. Grad school and college are two different kettles of fish.

But that’s not what this post is about.

No, this is about the after effects of studying for 6 hours non-stop and drinking too much caffeine. Sure, there’s that accomplished feeling you get, but then you want to veg out.

This is easy for my husband: He plays video games. Which is fine with me, gives me time to write and read and he gets to decompress. Win win in my book.

But I think decompressing is harder for English people. What do we do for fun? Read. What do we do for work/study? Read. After 6 hours of reading that’s the last thing I want to do. I don’t care if it’s fun reading or not. It’s still words. Words that start swimming across the page.

So what do I do to decompress?

I watch horrible TV. Not awesome TV that requires me to think. Total and complete brain candy. And non-English people just don’t get it. They don’t get the draw of the totally idiotic and stereotypic characters of reality TV. You don’t need to pay attention to what’s going on to make connections later in the show. There is always the bitch. There is always the “good” girl/guy. The slut. The goof-ball. The backstabber. It’s just new faces each time. It’s not like you’re invested on a deep level.

I would argue that a healthy balanced dose of horrible television is needed in a person’s mental diet. Okay, and here you can substitute video game or whatever. But yes, when you study for 1/4 of a day it’s allowed to watch 2(ish) hours of complete crap. For the same reasons Weight Watchers allows you to splurge a little bit each week. To keep you sane.

Now, for all of you people who are like: Why don’t you go out there and get some exercise?

You obviously haven’t studied for 6 hours non-stop. Or are really intense.

Thus I rest my case.

Reasons Why the End of October Will Rock…

Well there’s the obvious reason why the end of October rocks.

But this year, there are two new reasons. Awesome reasons. Don’t believe me? Just watch the clips below…

Yes, two… count ’em (ONE TWO) shows this fall based on Fairy Tales. How awesome is that?

The word you are looking for is extremely. It is extremely awesome.

Once Upon a Time comes to us from the writers of Lost. Which while a highly addictive show, had some major plot holes. Here’s hoping that won’t be a problem for our fairy tale inspired TV drama. I don’t know as much about Grimm other than the fact that it looks like it combines two of my favorite things (yes, I have a lot of favorite things) crime solving shows and fairy tales.

Color me excited. That color is somewhere between neon green and sparkly purple.

Any thoughts? We take comments from any and every reader. 🙂
